  • In addition to the above, the maintenance of aircon filter cleaning is carried out every month. The school employs SH Electrical for the maintenance work.
    After school has ended for the day’s lessons, the OSOs will be rostered to walk around designated classroom blocks to check on the lights and fans.
    The photocopying machines have power saving options enabled. When the machines are not in used they will go into sleep mode. Other examples of equipment are the monitor and desktop in the offices. Duplex and greyscale printing options are the default configuration at the computer and printer setup.

    The school engages a recycling contractor, VEOLIA, as contracted by MOE. We also recycle ink cartridges through TES-AMM (SINGAPORE) PTE LTD, and they collect the cartridges every 6 months. The school also reuses some of the banners and props (e.g decorative plants) during school event like school or CCA open house.

    6. National Youth Business Challenge (Eco-Friendly Business) – Green Club members set up stall at Changi City Point to sell environmental friendly products.

    The school has staff who specialise in environmental topics e.g. EEA (Environmental Education Advisors and teachers in Green Club and Environment Education Committee).

    The school also involves the parent support group in its environmental education efforts. ¬Parent support group was often invited to be the judges for our environment competitions. e.g Project Runway and ‘Building my People, Building my Home’ competition which were mentioned above.

    The school also takes concrete measures to reduce food wastage, such as food donation drives. We did a food donation drive competition during Total Defence Day, where classes compete to donate the highest amount of food.

    Posters are displayed in the common areas to promote positive environmental behaviours.

    In addition, Green Club is a CCA in East Spring Secondary that combines environmental conservation initiatives with entrepreneurial ideas. In each class, there is one Environment Ambassador as well. Among the staff, an Environment Education Committee oversees and drives conservation awareness among the staff and students. One of the major environment-themed events is the Earth Week in April. Our Pet Rocket programme is also one of the innovative “out of classroom” teaching methods that the school has adopted to encourage students to become more green and less wasteful.

    We have done away with the paper printing of school newsletter since beginning of 2015. Printed newsletters and fortnightly letters to parents have been replaced with digital copies available to parents online throught the parents' portal.
    The Greenest Class Competition was initiated in January 2007 to 1) check on the sustainability of the collection of recyclables by pupils as we believe that the Recycling Programme is effective only if it is sustained, 2) add an element of excitement to what the pupils are doing as it is a contest and 3) place emphasis on
    Reduce as the competition factors in the switching off of all electrical appliances. All classes are briefed by the teacher-in-charge at the school assembly in March this year. The rationale of this competition has also been communicated to them. Classes are assessed during surprise checks (about 8 times this year). Included in
    the checklist are the switching off of corridor lights and the presence of recyclables in the refuse bin. This year, we have included the results for the interclass newspaper collection competition into the score. The scores are announced after each check. Since last year, our Parent Support Group has been roped in to conduct the checks. This move means greater involvement of our
    stakeholders in our programme and promotes awareness in them as well.

    joined the NCS-Canon Managed Print Services in our effort to discourage indiscriminate printing and photocopying among staff as
    well as to raise awareness of the importance of reducing paper usage. This system, with printers set to print duplex, saves on paper used for printing. With this system, a monthly quota is set for printing for each staff member. In addition, the monthly print usage report is used by school leaders to monitor paper usage more closely.
    We have done away with the paper printing of fortnightly letters to parents, school newsletter. These are replaced with digital copies which are made available to parents online through the parents' portal.
    Extending the life of Nature Study Books. At Primary 3, pupils purchase the Nature Study book. The same book is used in Primary 4 – Primary 6 as long as there is space in the book instead of buying a new book every year.
